Roles of the Temporal and Frontal Lobes

The temporal lobes of the brain located in the lowest of the major subdivisions of the cortical mantle of the brain, containing the sensory center for hearing and forming the rear two thirds of the ventral surface of the cerebral hemisphere (Company, 2007).

The temporal lobes are separated from the frontal and parietal lobes above it by the fissure of Sylvius (Company, 2007). The Wernicke area of the brain is in the left temporal lobe and has functions such as language comprehension, semantic processing, language recognition, and language interpretation. The temporal lobe has several functions of the brain. Some of the functions are the controls speech, memory, and reading comprehension, sense memory for olfactory, visual and auditory information. The temporal lobes also help with stabilizing emotional response to keep the person emotionally stable (Kratz, 2014).

Heredity can play a role on the temporal lobes and the functions of the temporal lobes. One of the diseases that can affect the temporal lobes is temporal lobe epilepsy (TLE) consists of a heterogeneous group of seizure disorders originating in the temporal lobe. TLE had been thought to develop as a result of acquired structural problems in the temporal lobe (Su-Kyeong Hwang, 2011). Another disease that effects the temporal lobes is a disease called pick’s disease is a cause of dementia similar to Alzheimer’s disease. The disease affects the memory center of the person and will cause the temporal lobes to not work properly.

The disease causes the mood of the person to become unstable and may not be able to be changed. The frontal lobe is located in the anterior division of each cerebral hemisphere having its lower part in the anterior fossa of the skull and bordered behind by the central sulcus (Merriam-Webster, 2014). The frontal lobe is what links all the components of behavior on a high level. The frontal lobe of the brain is highly susceptible to injury since it is in the front of the head. The frontal lobe has more functions than the temporal lobes.

The frontal lobe of the brain has two hemispheres that are known as the right and left hemispheres. That is where the scientists came up with right side and left side thinking. The broca’s area is located in the lower portion of left frontal lobe of the brain and has several functions such as speech production, facial neuron control, and language processing. Some the functions of the frontal lobe are the development of the personality, impulse control, initiation, judgment, emotions, and it plays a huge role in expressive language. Depending on which half of the frontal lobe is injured depends on what the injury will affect.

An injury to the right frontal lobe will affect non-verbal communication and negative emotions. An injury to the left frontal lobe will affect language, verbal skills and positive emotions. Heredity conditions affect the frontal lobe of the brain. One of the hereditary conditions that affect the frontal lobe is degeneration. Degeneration of the frontal lobe is a disease process that progressively decline in the behavior or language of the person suffering from the disease. The person will start to go through dementia and start forgetting things.
